mlb policy & information for self published books
Congratulations on the self-publication of your book. And thank-you for your interest in having My Little Bookshop stock your book.
Here at My Little Bookshop, we appreciate that a lot of hard work and dedication goes into self-publishing a book. We acknowledge that although self-publishing is an important part of the book industry, it can be difficult for a self-published book to find a platform.
At My Little Bookshop, our core values are to be as environmentally friendly as possible, promoting sustainability and small businesses over waste and corporations. We have a focus on local, traditionally-published authors, and diverse, empowering and inclusive books, rather than the repetition of mass-produced books that can be found elsewhere at a price that undercuts small businesses and threatens to put them out of business.
Due to a large number of local authors requesting that we stock their self-published book, limited shelf space, and the time required to do a quality check of the self-published books our small business is requested to stock, we're unable to facilitate stocking self-published books.
However, we are happy to support our West Australian authors with self-published titles where we can.
- We're able to work with authors for book-launches, events, workshops, functions and performances. We have a bookstore on the Rockingham foreshore, open 7 days a week. We have two traveling book vans that are hosted at markets, live events and special occasions. And occasionally, we use our third traveling book store - a caravan. We use this for country appearances or larger events. Please speak to My Little Bookshop management about what we can do for you, and to discuss commission and fees. We're also always open to suggestions on how we can use our unique business to help you.
- We're able to offer the My Little Bookshop online store as a platform for your self-published book. While we're unable to stock your book directly, we'll gladly host your self-published book on the My Little Bookstore online store, with details of where to purchase the book from. We are currently trialing this, tentatively until June 30th, 2022.
Please read the below conditions carefully, as refusal may offend.
In line with our core values and our capacity as a small business our conditions are:
- The author of the self-published book must supply My Little Bookshop with a blurb of the self-published book they're wanting to have on the My Little Bookshop online store, and details of where to purchase the self-published book from. The details on where to buy the self-published book can be any combination of a direct phone number, email address, or a link to a web page that is stocking the self-published book.
- The details on where to buy the self-published book must be provided by the author directly, or with the author's consent in writing.
- The link the author may provide for a self-published book must not be for a business that undercuts independent bookshops. Examples include, but are not limited to: Book Depository, Amazon, Abe Books, Dymocks, QBD, Angus + Robertson, Target, Big-W, K-mart, Myer, David Jones or Booktopia.
- The link for the self-published book the author provides to My Little Bookshop may be for the author's own website, an Australian self-publishing house's website, or another independent bookstore that has the self-published book available for purchase. My Little Bookshop is open to other suggestions of what other links can be provided.
- My Little Bookshop is able to host as many self-published books on the My Little Bookshop online bookshop that an author has available, within reason. Factors that we take into consideration of how many self-published books an author may have on the My Little Bookshop online store include the time it takes My Little Bookshop to set up each individual page on the My Little Bookshop online store, as well as providing fair coverage to all authors choosing to use the My Little Bookshop online store as a platform for their self-published book.
- My Little Bookshop takes 0% commission for any self-published books sold as a result of the My Little Bookshop online store.
- Due to the limitations of the software that My Little Bookshop uses, the My Little Bookshop online store has to have stock available for it to appear on the online store.
- To accommodate this, the My Little Bookshop online store will list each self-published book as having 1 copy in stock on the My Little Bookshop online store, despite that My Little Bookshop will have no stock of the self-published book.
- A disclaimer will appear on the web page of every self-published book on the My Little Bookshop online store stating that the book is not for sale directly through the My Little Bookshop online store, followed by details on where the book is available for purchase from, as supplied by the author. Each self-published book will be marked on the My Little Bookshop online store as $0.00, with the price of the self-published book instead listed in the blurb or where to buy the self-published book from.
- In the event that a customer disregards this disclaimer, and purchases a self-published book that we don't have available, My Little Bookshop will refund any cost to the customer, inform the customer that the book isn't available directly through My Little Bookshop or the My Little Bookshop online store, and remind them to follow the details on where they can buy the self-published book from.
- Advertising of any kind that claims a self-published book is available to purchase from My Little Bookshop may result in the self-published book being removed from the My Little Bookshop online store.
- To prevent legal risks due to national and international licensing laws and copyright, My Little Bookshop can not provide a link directly to an e-book or digital audiobook of any kind, or stock an e-book or digital audiobook.
- The author of a self-published book listed on the My Little Bookshop online store must live in Western Australia.
- My Little Bookshop stocking a book instore, or stocking or listing a book on the My Little Bookshop online store is not an endorsement of the author, the book, or the views, or subjects raised within the book.
- On occasion, My Little Bookshop will stock a self-published book instore or online. This is done entirely at the discretion of My Little Bookshop, and is not an indicator of the type of self-published book My Little Bookshop may stock, or an invitation for authors to submit their self-published book for consideration of sale.
- If My Little Bookshop lists a self-published book on the My Little Bookshop online store, any instore or online advertising or promotion will be done at My Little Bookshop's discretion.
- Self-published books that the author wishes to have listed on the My Little Bookshop online store must be submitted directly by the author of the self-published book. My Little Bookshop can not accept submissions directly from an agent representing an author's self-published book, a self-publisher, or a self-publishing house.
- In the event that My Little Bookshop is unreasonably inundated with mass submissions for listing on the My Little Bookshop online store, My Little Bookshop will discontinue this service.
- If a submission to have a self-published book listed on the My Little Bookshop online store does not meet these conditions, My Little Bookshop is not required to reply to the query.
- My Little Bookshop reserves the right to remove any book, either from the My Little Bookshop store or the My Little Bookshop online store, at any point, and with no reason.
- If a self-published book becomes unavailable to purchase from the details an author provides to My Little Bookshop, the author is required to inform My Little Bookshop, or provide My Little Bookshop with alternative details that meet My Little Bookshop's conditions. If My Little Bookshop finds there are out of date details for a self-published book listed on the My Little Bookshop online store, My Little Bookshop will remove the listing from the My Little Bookshop online store, with no notice given to the author.
- All enquiries for self-published books to be listed on the My Little Bookshop online store are to be submitted via email to Admin@MyLittleBookshop.com.au.
- The conditions above are subject to change.
- The conditions above are non-negotiable.
Although some of these conditions may come across as restrictive or harsh, these are the conditions we need to have in place, in order to give West Australian authors a fair and equal opportunity platform to promote and sell their book. As well as working within the limits of a small business.
Thank you for your understanding as we all aim to achieve an outcome that promotes literacy and the love of of reading.
